The admission centred on how he chose to handle the situation publicly, rather than the desire to leave itself. Talavera noted that until recently Alvarez had stayed silent on the matter with team-mates, making this a notable change in approach.

Alvarez went public with his wish to leave Atletico during the 2026 World Cup, giving Barcelona encouragement to pursue a deal.
