Mikel Arteta has publicly backed Bruno Guimaraes to elevate Arsenal after the Brazilian midfielder was unveiled to supporters ahead of Sunday’s pre-season Emirates Cup defeat to Borussia Dortmund. The 28-year-old completed a £75m move from Newcastle United on a four-year deal, making him one of the most expensive midfield signings in Arsenal’s history.
Arteta told arsenal.com he was struck immediately by the energy Guimaraes brought to the training ground. The Arsenal manager described his new signing as a warrior with leadership and charisma, and said that quality would ignite something different within the squad.
What Arteta Sees on the Pitch
Speaking to the club’s official website, as reported by Football Muse and The Guardian, Arteta outlined a detailed tactical profile for Guimaraes. He pointed to the midfielder’s ability to operate in two positions depending on the opponent, his timing and instinct in winning the ball back, and his capacity to progress play quickly.
Arteta also highlighted Guimaraes’ comfort playing passes between the lines and his threat in front of goal. The Arsenal boss said Guimaraes has a sharp sense of when to arrive in the penalty area and the finishing ability to convert those moments.
Guimaraes’ Record at Newcastle
At Newcastle, Guimaraes made a significant mark. He helped the Magpies reach the Champions League on two occasions and captained the side to League Cup glory in 2025, ending a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. His arrival at Arsenal bolsters a midfield that already includes Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi and Eberechi Eze, according to The Guardian.
Lyon will also benefit financially. Per L’Équipe, the French club is set to pocket close to €7.5 million through a resale-profit clause built into the original deal that took Guimaraes to Newcastle.
Arsenal’s Pre-Season Result
The Emirates Cup itself ended in a 3-2 loss for Arsenal. Samuele Inácio, Konstantinos Karetsas and Joane Gadou scored for Borussia Dortmund. Ethan Nwaneri and a Viktor Gyökeres penalty pulled two back for the hosts. Arsenal won a pre-arranged penalty shootout 5-4 after the final whistle.
Arteta was candid in his assessment of the performance. He told the club website he was disappointed with the result and pointed to poor moments in set-piece situations and defensive timing. He acknowledged some bright attacking combinations but noted a lack of quality in the final pass cost his side clear chances.
Ødegaard did make his first appearance of pre-season during the game, returning following the World Cup. Arteta confirmed his full squad would report back on Monday.
Arsenal enter the new season as defending Premier League champions, seeking to retain the title they clinched last term after three consecutive runner-up finishes.
