Jasprit Bumrah will not feature in India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with the world’s top-ranked Test bowler sidelined by a left knee problem that has taken longer to resolve than medical staff anticipated. The series opens in Galle on August 15.
According to The Cricket News via Yahoo Sports, the 32-year-old received a cortisone injection into the knee last month as planned, but his recovery has extended beyond the initial timeline. The BCCI Centre of Excellence medical team has decided against rushing him back and is prioritising a full rehabilitation instead.
News18 reports that the discomfort first surfaced during the second ODI against England. That makes this an injury with a traceable origin, not a sudden setback.
When the Knee Problem Emerged
The issue became apparent during India’s ODI series against England. BCCI medical staff recommended the cortisone injection shortly after, and Hindustan Times noted that the board has since been working through a recovery timeline that proved more complex than first projected.
There had been internal discussion about making Bumrah available for the second Test in Colombo. That option has now been ruled out. The medical team chose caution over convenience.
India’s Replacement Options
With Bumrah unavailable for both Tests, the selectors face a straightforward decision on who steps in. According to The Cricket News, Kashmiri pacer Auqib Nabi is the frontrunner to take Bumrah’s place in the squad. No official announcement has been made by the BCCI at the time of publication.
Nabi’s selection would represent a significant opportunity. Bumrah is irreplaceable in terms of output, but the series gives an uncapped or lightly capped bowler a rare chance to impress at Test level.
What India Lose Without Him
Bumrah currently holds the top spot in the ICC Test bowling rankings. His absence removes India’s primary wicket-taking threat in conditions outside the subcontinent — though Galle’s spin-friendly surfaces may limit the impact of losing a pace bowler more than other venues would.
India still travel to Sri Lanka as strong favourites. The squad depth in pace and the home team’s recent Test form both point that way.
