Jürgen Klopp has been appointed Germany’s new head coach on a contract running through to 2030, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Friday. The 59-year-old returns to management after stepping away from Liverpool in 2024, citing diminished energy reserves at the end of his nine-year stint at Anfield. He takes charge of a national side still searching for its first major honour since the 2014 World Cup.
Klopp succeeds Julian Nagelsmann, dismissed on 3 July following Germany’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Paraguay knocked the hosts out in the round of 32 on penalties — a result that extended a sequence of underwhelming tournament performances stretching back to 2018.
From Red Bull to the DFB
Since leaving Liverpool, Klopp had been serving as Red Bull’s global head of football, overseeing the company’s network of clubs. His move to the DFB role required no compensation payment to Red Bull. Instead, as announced by the DFB, the federation will donate €1 million to Wings for Life, a spinal cord research charity backed by the energy drinks company.
The money goes to charity. Not to Red Bull.
Klopp and his full coaching staff — which includes Peter Krawietz, Pep Lijnders, and Sven Bender — are set to begin work on 15 August.
A Decorated CV, A Clear Mandate
Klopp built his managerial reputation at Mainz before winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund. His Liverpool tenure brought six trophies, among them the Premier League, the Champions League, and the FA Cup. He arrives as one of the most decorated coaches of his generation. The task now is to reverse a prolonged run of international disappointment.
Per Mertesacker will also join the DFB structure, taking over from Andreas Rettig as Managing Director of Sport from 1 January 2027.

The DFB has handed him until the 2030 World Cup to restore the national team’s standing.
