New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft confirmed on Saturday that the franchise has presented cornerback Christian Gonzalez with a contract extension offer that would surpass every deal ever given to a player at his position. Speaking at the team’s training camp on the first day of practice, Kraft told reporters the offer would make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history — and, at the same time, the most expensive contract in the Patriots’ own storied history.
Kraft said the organisation loves Gonzalez as both a player and a person, and that the offer reflects exactly that, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. He added that the team drafted him, watched him grow, and hopes he stays in New England for years to come.
The Benchmark Gonzalez Would Break
The contract New England would need to beat belongs to Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie, who signed a four-year deal worth 124 million dollars earlier this year. That agreement pays McDuffie 31 million dollars annually and includes 100 million dollars guaranteed — a record figure for a defensive back. Any extension signed by Gonzalez would need to clear that bar in both total value and average annual value.
On the Patriots’ internal record books, the current benchmark is defensive tackle Milton Williams, whose four-year, 104-million-dollar deal signed in March 2025 stands as the richest in franchise history. Gonzalez’s extension, if completed, would push past that figure. For context, even Tom Brady — the most decorated player in Patriots history — never signed a contract larger than a four-year, 72-million-dollar deal during his time in New England.
Gonzalez’s Standing on His Current Deal
Gonzalez, 24, is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract after the Patriots exercised his fifth-year option in April. That option will pay him 2.3 million dollars in 2026, rising to 18.1 million in 2027. He still has two seasons remaining on that deal, meaning there is no immediate urgency, but the team is clearly eager to secure him beyond those years.
New England selected Gonzalez with the 17th overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Oregon. His debut season was cut short after four games due to a shoulder injury. He rebounded strongly.

Gonzalez earned his first Pro Bowl selection following the 2025 regular season, recording 69 tackles and 10 passes defended across 14 starts, missing three games with a hamstring issue. Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed the day before Kraft’s public comments that negotiations between the club and Gonzalez’s representatives were ongoing, per Fox Sports. Kraft also addressed whether separate contract activity around the league — including talks with other players — had any bearing on the Gonzalez situation, saying the Patriots are negotiating solely with Gonzalez’s agents and that those discussions are separate from anything else happening around the NFL, according to ESPN.
No agreement has been announced. The specific terms of the offer have not been disclosed publicly, but based on the thresholds Kraft described, analysts at Yahoo Sports note the deal would logically need to be at least four years and 31 million dollars per year to clear the existing record.
