Real Madrid are closing in on a blockbuster summer signing. The Spanish giants have accelerated negotiations with RB Leipzig over 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande, with multiple sources indicating a deal worth between €115 million and €120 million is taking shape.
Spanish outlet AS, via journalist Jose Felix Diaz, reports that Madrid have already secured the player’s personal agreement and that face-to-face talks between club representatives took place in Germany. According to Madrid Universal via Yahoo Sports, a fee in that range is now considered achievable by both parties, with negotiations having gathered pace over the past week.
How Madrid Outmanoeuvred Their Rivals
For much of the summer, PSG appeared the likeliest destination for Diomande. Reports during the Club World Cup pointed to the French club as frontrunners, with some outlets claiming the Ivory Coast international had even settled on Paris as his preference. However, Madrid worked quietly in the background while attention was directed elsewhere — a tactic Managing Madrid likens to the club’s successful pursuit of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. PSG ultimately never submitted an offer sufficient to persuade Leipzig to sell.
Liverpool also entered the picture. The Premier League club had a bid approaching €100 million rejected by Leipzig and remain interested, though reports suggest they are unwilling to raise their offer to match Leipzig’s valuation.
Leipzig’s Stance and the Negotiating Gap
Leipzig’s position has been firm. According to Bild, the Bundesliga club rejected Madrid’s opening offer of around €100 million. Sky Germany reported that the proposal comprised an initial fee of approximately £76.9 million plus £8.5 million in performance-related add-ons — a structure Leipzig considered insufficient.
The German club’s asking price sits closer to €130 million. A compromise in the €120 million region now appears to be the likely landing zone, per Managing Madrid. Leipzig’s sporting leadership had publicly insisted Diomande would remain at the club next season, though that stance is now being tested by Madrid’s persistence.
Diomande’s Rise to the Top of the Market
Diomande turns 20 this year. In just two senior seasons — first at Leganes in Spain, then at RB Leipzig — he has established himself as one of European football’s most coveted attacking players. He was widely considered among the Bundesliga’s standout performers last season, a breakout year he shared with Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise.
His profile also rose further during the 2026 World Cup, where he featured for Ivory Coast before their elimination. That international exposure only reinforced Madrid’s decision to make him their primary summer target on the right side of attack.
Where the Deal Stands
The Athletic reports that Madrid identified Diomande as a priority and are actively working to finalise an agreement. Personal terms are not expected to be a sticking point — a significant factor throughout the process, according to Madrid Universal. The deal is not yet complete, but the direction of travel is clear.
Madrid’s interest in Diomande is also reported to be independent of any departure from their current squad. The Athletic notes that manager José Mourinho and the club continue to value Brahim Díaz, meaning this signing is not contingent on a sale.
