The Miami Heat have held discussions with the representatives of veteran guard Bradley Beal, according to the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang, as the franchise works to build a supporting cast around Giannis Antetokounmpo following their blockbuster trade for the former Milwaukee Bucks star.
Beal, a 14-year veteran and three-time All-Star who has earned around $342 million over the course of his NBA career, became an unrestricted free agent after declining a $5.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Clippers. ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk reported that Beal had signed with the Clippers the previous summer but managed only six appearances before a fractured left hip brought his season to a premature end. His numbers before the injury represented career lows across the board.
Heat Miss Out on LeBron, Now Target Shooters
Miami’s offseason rebuild accelerated after LeBron James chose to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers rather than the Heat. According to The Sporting News, the franchise responded by acquiring Antetokounmpo and has since shifted focus to filling the roster with perimeter shooting and scoring depth.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Klay Thompson is Miami’s top priority target. Thompson has one year remaining on his contract with the Dallas Mavericks, meaning the Heat are exploring both a potential trade and the possibility of a buyout.
Beal sits alongside DeMar DeRozan as another name the Heat have engaged with, per Chiang’s reporting. The Sporting News noted that Miami views Beal’s perimeter skill set as a strong stylistic fit alongside their new franchise player.
Boston Celtics Also in the Picture
Miami is not alone in its pursuit of Beal. Bleacher Report’s Andrew Peters reported, citing Clutch Points’ Brett Siegel, that Beal’s interest in the Heat is mutual, though the Boston Celtics have also expressed intent to sign the guard. Both clubs could offer Beal a veteran minimum contract, making the financial barrier to a deal low on either side.
Beal’s motivation is clear. He wants to join a title contender in the final stretch of his career, per reporting cited by The Sporting News, and both Miami and Boston fit that profile heading into the 2026-27 season.
Beal’s Case for a Role in Miami
The argument for landing in South Florida centres on fit. The Sporting News outlined that after missing out on James, the Heat are prioritising shooters and scorers who can operate alongside Antetokounmpo. Beal, when healthy, is an elite perimeter creator who spent much of his career as a primary scoring option in Washington alongside players including Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker at various points.
Durability remains the key concern. His hip fracture limited him to a handful of games with the Clippers, and any club signing him on a minimum deal accepts that health risk in exchange for significant upside if he returns to form.
No deal has been confirmed. Miami’s roster construction is ongoing, with Thompson and Beal representing the two most prominent names in circulation as the team prepares for life with Antetokounmpo at its core.
