Luke Donald has added Pádraig Harrington to his Team Europe backroom staff for the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland. The contest runs from September 13–19, 2027. The three-time major champion becomes the third vice-captain confirmed under Donald, following the earlier appointments of brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari.
Europe will be chasing a third straight Ryder Cup victory, having beaten the United States at Marco Simone in 2023 and Bethpage Black in 2025. The appointment brings a local dimension to the team’s preparations — Harrington was part of the only previous Ryder Cup held in Ireland, as a player at The K Club in 2006.
A Long History in the Team Room
Harrington’s Ryder Cup involvement stretches back to his debut at The Country Club in Brookline in 1999. He appeared in six editions as a player, winning on four occasions, and accumulated 10½ points across those appearances. He served as vice-captain three times before captaining Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021 — where Donald was among his own vice-captains.
The two men met at The Open this summer to discuss the role, according to the official Ryder Cup announcement. Harrington said he had not expected to wear the European Ryder Cup badge again. He described the chance to be involved in Ireland as something he was unwilling to pass up.
Donald’s Case for Harrington
Ireland called. Harrington answered. Donald explained the thinking behind the choice, pointing to Harrington’s familiarity with Adare Manor, his relationship with venue owner JP McManus, and his standing among current Tour players. Donald described Harrington as a deep thinker who would approach things differently to the Molinari brothers — more extroverted, and likely to challenge Donald’s own decision-making in a way he believes will benefit the team.
Donald also cited Harrington’s continued presence on Tour at the highest level as a factor, noting that the players know who he is and will respond to his experience.
The Adare Manor Setting
Harrington was effusive about the occasion itself, according to rydercup.com. He described Adare as a beautiful venue that will showcase both golf and Irish hospitality, predicting the atmosphere will be unmatched. He also paid tribute to McManus, noting the venue owner’s longstanding commitment to the Limerick community.
The 2027 edition marks the 100th anniversary of the biennial contest. That alone makes it significant. Adare Manor will host the event for the first time.
Donald’s vice-captaincy team now stands at three confirmed names — Francesco Molinari, Edoardo Molinari, and Harrington — with the captain himself describing the trio as a complementary blend of experience and personality.
