19 Jul 2026 · MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford NJHow the 32-team knockout works
For the first time, the expanded 48-team World Cup feeds a 32-team knockout round. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advance automatically (24 teams), joined by the eight best third-placed teams. That makes 32, who then play single-elimination matches: Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final, with a third-place play-off between the two beaten semi-finalists. If a knockout tie is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played, then a penalty shootout if still tied.
